The Great Green Wall Documentary - 2020

Initiatives see the light of day and then fall a little into oblivion… The Great Green Wall of Africa is one of them. The African Union‘s large-scale project is to plant 8,000 km of greenery, crossing the continent from Dakar to Djibouti. The documentary The Great Green Wall sheds light on this ambitious project that began in 2007.

Through a musical journey producer Fernando Meirelles and Malian artist and activist Inna Modja dive into the complexity of the context. With this film, they delve into the many issues at stake in the project and remind us of the urgency to act.

The Sahel is plagued by climate change and desertification. The Great Green Wall aims to slow the effects, not just on a local scale but globally. To slow down the advance of the desert, to recreate a green lung and a nourishing land, to improve the living conditions and to generate jobs in a region where the population is growing, where the candidates for exile are numerous, and where conflicts are multiple.

Although the project may seem utopian and give rise to debate, it has evolved considerably since its inception and has taken many forms.
